Bamboo Pencils

Collaboration with the organization URAVU in Kerala, India during a two weeks design course initiated by HIT. We were asked to design a product using bamboo as the main material. Encountering both this new material, raw bamboo, and the people and culture of India maid me wonder about sustainable design. What is the ecological, environmental or economical essence of a sustainable product?

Since bamboo is a very common, every-day material in India, I decided to design a common every-day product using a simple manipulation. Casting led or oil crayon into the cylindrical void of the raw bamboo created a series of pencils and crayons.
